Honey, so called Madhu in ayurveda, is a sweet much praised in all Ayurvedic classics. Madhu is classified into various categories depending on their color and distinctive properties. The earliest scriptures on honey dates back to the 3rd century BC in the writings of Acharya Charaka. Honey is understood to have a sweet – astringent flavour with cold potency and an astringent metabolic end effect. It possesses the properties of being cold, oily and heavy with soothing potential all at the same time. These properties help to normalise all the three bodily humours of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, when administered with the right choices. Madhu is understood to have Chedana property or the ability to cut and eliminate accumulated Dosha from their site of manifestation.
Because of its ability to remove accumulated entities, it is much relevant in the treatment of Cough and faster drying of wounds. Honey is considered the best natural remedy for both dry and wet cough. When combined with soothing herbs it helps to remove the accumulated Dosha, especially Kapha entity from the respiratory tract. Despite having cold potency, the intensity of Chenada action of honey creates the drying action over wounds and skin lesions, creating a better environment for faster healing process.
